The Seed Huntress
The Southport Globe Onion Initiative
Welcoming this allium heirloom home!
Southport, Connecticut was once considered the "Onion Capital of the World," with over 200,000 barrels of onions shipped on sloop sailboats each year from 1840-1890 to the New York City Markets.
Prized for their taste, storage ability and high levels of vitamin C, they were a staple of he Union Army during the Civil War to prevent scurvy.
For the first time in 130 years we have planted this prolific heirloom back in its home soils- to harvest bioregionally adapted seeds and revive the agrarian history of this beautiful area.
